Iona Verity
Costume Maker

For the Missing Live Theatre project I based my designs on the 6 statues that stand above the doors of the old government building in Edinburgh. These statues which represent 6 different sectors of Edinburgh (Health, State Craft, Education, Architecture, Agriculture, Fisheries) would otherwise go unnoticed as they are above direct eyeline so i wanted to bring them alive in a sense in a performance protest outside new parliament, this is due to there being elements of each sector in which the government has failed to act; such as pollution for the fisheries sector and Covid-19 for health.
I chose to make the costume I designed for the health character and i thought it was poignant at the time. this costume resembles a patchwork nurses scrubs with an x-ray of Covid infected lungs appliqued onto the front. the main element of this costume however is the movable angelic wings which are harnessed beneath the garment and made from a cardboard structure with the tartan bags as the shape. I finished the wings with looped paper on the back to form the feathers and calico channels on the front with string lights running though to form the shape of a ribcage- protecting the lungs.
